From FDA's drug shortage FAQ:

• FDA says a status of “available” “reflects the most current information from the manufacturer, but is not an FDA determination that the shortage has been resolved.”
• FDA “checks with the manufacturers to determine whether supplies are adequate to meet demand at the national level.”
• FDA says local supply issues “are usually temporary and often involve distribution issues, which resolve when the pharmacy is able to reorder from their distributor.”

How to find it in stock

• Call with the exact medication, strength and form on your prescription.
• Ask whether they can fill it today.
• Check more than one pharmacy, including grocery and independent ones. FDA's advice is to “check multiple stores or pharmacies.”
• Some pharmacies won't discuss controlled-substance inventory by phone.

As of September 26, 2026, FDA's drug shortage list shows Adderall and generic mixed amphetamine salts as a current shortage for immediate-release tablets. Of 73 current listings from 11 manufacturers, 44 were marked available, 10 limited and 19 unavailable. 6 of 7 current brand-name Adderall listings were marked available. This page covers immediate-release Adderall tablets and their generics. It does not report Adderall XR's status. A drug missing from FDA's list can still be hard to find.
